Happy Ending?

The ending of Clover isn't exactly "and they lived happily ever after." Oruha and Suu are both dead and we know Lan is going to die soon. That leaves Kazuhiko and Gingetsu to mourn their loved ones, but what kind of ending did we expect from Clamp?

Kazuhiko and Oruha get married and adopt Suu as their daughter. Suu starts going to school and the other kids are so impressed with her that fight over whom gets to be her friend. Oruha becomes a famous singer and she and her husband and daughter sing a duet together which becomes an international hit. They buy a big house with a garden of clover in the back. Lan and Gingetsu get a house near theirs and they often come over to visit and have tea and cookies.

Hardly.

The ending is bitter sweet rather than totally happy. Everyone is at peace and has found a bit of happiness. Kazuhiko may have lost his lover, but he seems more at peace with it than at the beginning. Oruha was able to love and died happy. Suu too died happy, having made friends in the outside world. Lan and Gingetsu may be parted soon, but they understand that and are happy in the present instead of fearing the future.

The ending is happy, but not in the respect that most stories are. Then again, Clover is never like other stories.
