Gyokuran

Gyokuran is the quintessential golden boy. He is intelligent and powerful, although he has trouble controlling his powers and has to wear earrings to seal with ESP. He is also kind, open hearted, loyal, and friendly—everything that Shion is not. The two are sort of like friends, but Shion really hates the boy that is so unlike himself. The problem the two of them have is that they never try to understand each other, and if they had, perhaps they would have been real friends or perhaps Gyokuran would have been less insistent on their friendship.

The two became “friends” when they were young. Shion was always being harassed by mean people but he would fight them off. Gyokuran defended him, claiming that he was a good person inside, which irritated Shion. Afterwards Gyokuran would cry, which would irritate the unemotional Shion even more. Shion was stronger and smarter than Gyokuran and in most respects he felt superior to him. Also, he didn’t trust the boy who was just trying to be kind and assumed that he was making fun of him. Gyokuran came from a very happy home and when he took Shion to meet his family, Shion was deeply hurt because he thought Gyokuran was showing off and trying to torture him by showing him exactly what he would never have.

Later, they attend the same school and Gyokuran introduces his new friend named Shukaido. Gyokuran was still blind to Shion’s hatred for him and continued to believe that he was really a good person. Shukaido, on the other hand, saw how much Shion hated his friend and never liked him. Gyokuran starts to see the real Shion when he gets a crush on a girl who likes Shion. Shion uses and dumps her, and she only forgives him when Gyokuran insists on it.

In college he “dates” Enju, a pretty and kind girl with telepathic powers. The two are sent on the same assignment, as are Shion, Shukaido, and Shuseran (Enju’s best friend). Gyokuran is instantly taken with Mokuren and becomes her friend, eventually totally falling for her and forgetting about Enju. He is extremely pleased when Mokuren mentions that she and Gyokuran share their names with a flower--the same flower but with a different name.

Mokuren becomes a source of conflict between Shion and Gyokuran which climaxes when Shion demands that everyone goes to earth, and tries to get the passwords so he will control the moon base. Gyokuran fights him, resulting in Shion being locked up. Mokuren tries to smooth the situation over and Shion ends up raping her. Gyokuran no longer defends his former friend. After that, the virus hits and Gyokuran is the first to die. He reincarnates as Jinpachi and continues to adore Mokuren in the form of Alice.
