Remusaine Shukaido
Shukaido is quiet and reserved. He isn’t perfectly healthy and he is shy around new people. He was extremely grateful when a kind and friendly boy named Gyokuran befriended him when he started a new class. He knows that Gyokuran is a good person who wants to help people. Gyokuran introduces Shion to him as his best childhood friend, and Shukaido is impressed by how smart Shion is, but Shion is cold and distant.
Shukaido, unlike Gyokuran who believes that Shion is a good person deep down, sees that Shion is actually not a very nice person and doesn’t like him. He sees that Shion hates his friend, but he says nothing about it to Gyokuran, who probably would have denied it anyway. He tries to find out from Shion exactly why he feels the way he does, and Shion admits to feeling that he is better than Gyokuran.
He was sent on the moon mission as a doctor. While on the moon base he falls in love with Mokuren, as do Gyokuran and Shion. When Shion tells everyone that they need to have keywords, he chooses “seeking paradise in a dream” because it was something that Mokuren liked. He shares with Mokuren a deep affection for animals (as does Haruhiko, which is something that gives him away when he is suppose to be Shion).
Shion’s rape of Mokuren angers him, as it does everyone else on the moon. When everyone dies of the plague except him, Mokuren, and Shion, he gets his revenge. He discovers a vaccine that will protect a person from the plague, but he is only able to make enough for one person, but it will be of no use to him because he is already sick. He could give it to either Mokuren or Shion and he decides that, as punishment for what he did to Mokuren, Shion should be left alone on the moon.
He goes to Shion and tells him about the vaccine. He claims that he already gave some to Mokuren, and Shion hugs him and cries, sorry about all the horrible things he had believed about Shukaido. He feels guilty, but gives him the vaccine anyway. He dies, and Mokuren and Shion are left alone on the moon. Mokuren dies, and Shion simply believes that the vaccine didn’t work, but he tests her blood and realizes what Shukaido had done.
His incarnation looks a lot like Shion (perhaps to have a better chance with Mokuren’s incarnation), but he also has a very weak heart and is constantly tormented by the sin of his past life. Haru vows to do penance for his past life and tries to help Alice and Rin. Perhaps he and Shion will never be able to be friends, but Rin and Haruhiko appear to at least be at peace.
