The night was dark, but the men were in high spirits as they sat around the campfire celebrating the expected victory over their enemies. Escaflowne resides over the troops, as silent and grave as a temple. The King stands apart from his men, talking with a young Balgus, who wishes to leave after the war to "hone (his) spirit." The king tells him that he will miss him, but he wants his friend to become a great warrior and someday return to him.

Suddenly there is a sound, a beautiful song, and bright light emitting from a nearby lake. The two men walk to investigate the sudden phenomena and find a beautiful woman standing in the water. Fireflies dance around her as she sways her arms, almost as if directing them in a choreographed dance. She wears a white dress and her long, straight hair flows gently, as in a breeze. Suddenly long, gorgeous, white wings grow out of her back, revealing her identity.

"A Draconian! A descendant of Atlantis!" Balgus exclaims. He declares her a danger and steps in front of his king, drawing his sword to protect him. The king puts his hand on his friend's shoulder and tells him to stand down. He is drawn by her beauty and declares, "I'd gladly let such a demon steal my soul."

Birds suddenly rise up and fly away. The woman turns to look directly at the men who watch her from a distance. The mystic moon coupled with her partner moon hangs prominently in the night sky. The King walks out into the water to be closer to her and she asks if he is Goau of Fanelia. When he asks how she knows his name, she replies that she was destined to meet the man she would love on the night when the Mystic Moon hung high over the western mountains. He takes her hand as the fireflies continue to dance and asks her if she will come with him.

His advisers are furious, telling him that they could never support such a marriage, but Goau is just as hot headed as his sons, and he asserts his love for Varie and declares that no one can keep them apart. They are happy for a time, having two sons, Van and Folken. Goau laughs as holds his new born son Van in his arms and shows him to his new brother. All is well for the happy family, but it cannot last.

The King becomes ill and dies, which devastates Varie and leaves his oldest son to accept the trial for the crown. Balgus returns but he is too late to see the king, but he can help his friend's children. When Folken doesn't return from the rite, his mother simply cannot take it. She seems to forget her other son and she leaves to find her other son never to be seen again.
