After the deaths of Naria and Eriya, Folken must face the reality of his mission. Dornkirk believes that the catgirls had served their purpose like tissues or plastic forks, but Folken knew they were much more than disposable weapons. He had rescued them, cared for them, and used them just as Dornkirk had wished. He now understood what his brother stood for and why he had been so wrong. No person is disposable.

Folken returns to the brother he loves, but he had already broke Van's heart by revealing himself as a traitor. Van does not fully understand yet that violence will destroy Gaea. In the Dragon field Van faces the giant beasts with a sword while Folken looks them in the eyes-eyes that reflect his own courage and sorrow. He rescues Hitomi and helps her look in to the eyes of the dragon as well. Now Van must listen to him, although he may not trust him yet.

Folken is a valuable addition to the team. He understands Dornkirk and can provide them with valuable inside information. Van, still nursing his wounded heart, does not trust his brother as the others do, which fills Folken with sorrow. Hitomi decides to trust him, knowing that if she doesn't, they can never be friends.

The time for battle comes and Van rides out on Escaflowne. Folken remains in his laboratory as he has had his fill of war. Hitomi's heart aches as she worries about her dear friend so she runs to Folken begging him to help her. He shows her his black wings and explains that he has played with fate too much and his life is coming to an end. Hitomi replies that his death would make Van sad, but still he believes that killing Dornkirk is the answer to ending the war. Than maybe Van will be free like he was as a child.

Folken and Hitomi face Dornkirk but around him is a zone of absolute action and reaction. The sword that slices through the body of the frail old man breaks off and stabs the chest of the black angel. He falls to his death, while Van, sensing the death of his dear brother, screams. The spirit of Dornkirk tries to tell her that destruction is the wish of Gaea, but she can't believe that. Van claims he will avenge his brother's death, not understanding that it was killing that Folken wanted to save him from. Folken, who had tried to tear them apart, helps Hitomi realize that she loves Van. She calls for him and he rushes to her side and their love is able to save the world of Gaea.

Folken had to die to atone for his life of destruction, but he got his wish. He freed Van from the suffering of war and helped him find the one he loved. Van and Hitomi see his spirit with his arms around his catgirls, finally free of his own suffering. Now both Van and Folken are happy.
