The Silence Glaive is the weapon wielded by Sailorsaturn which consists of a large, elegantly curved blade attacked to a long, tapered staff. According to Wikipedia, a glaive is an actually type of weapon which consists of a blade connected to a pole and was generally used in hand-to-hand combat. Saturn’s glaive in particular resembles a scythe, which is literally a tool for reaping, but metaphorically represents death. The scythe is also associated with Saturn, a god of Harvest and thus of destruction and death.

Like the Talismans and Sailormoon’s various wands and rods, the Silence Glaive also has magical properties. It is not generally used as a traditional weapon like a sword or spear (although Saturn does use it to stab Pharaoh 90), but as a magical devise to utilize and direct power. The particular power of the Silence Glaive is destruction. When using it to fullest extent, Saturn can simply lower the blade and destroy an entire planet; however, she also uses it for her other, lower level attacks.

In the manga she is actually shown lowering the glaive and bringing destruction to the world which is only countered by the power of Sailormoon. At the fall of the Silver Millennium she appeared and lowered her glaive, ultimately destroying what was left of the Moon Kingdom. In the anime this action is not actually shown because the battle takes place in a giant, opaque cloud, so it is unclear if she attempted this maneuver or not, but she apparently intended to do so.

Although this is entirely a matter of personal opinion, the Silence Glaive is the most beautiful of all of the weapons in the Sailormoon canon. Although Sailormoon’s weapons are nice in their way, they are generally rather cute, with hearts and crystals and such. Pluto’s staff is quite nice, as are the sword and mirror of Uranus and Neptune, but they are not as beautiful as the glaive. The glaive has an elegant but simple blade, while the staff has lovely detail like the flower like piece where the blade meets the staff or the detail at the bottom. It also has the distinction of being one of the only weapons in the series that is actually a weapon.

The Glaive is a weapon that truly suits the Senshi who wields it.
