Shattered
Although she can now easily control him, Inuyasha decides to hang around Kagome until she gives him the jewel, either willingly or not. This proves to be considerably harder than anticipated when she gets kidnapped by some bandits whose master desires the sacred jewel. When the leader tries to kill her with his sword, he swings wildly, and kills one of his own men. Kagome figures out that something is wrong with him and she tries to help his men escape by tossing the Shikon no Tama. The possessed leader is about to kill Kagome, when Inuyasha dashes in and saves her. A Corpse Crow had taken possession of the leader and made a nest in his chest. The demon flies away, but Inuyasha was not interested in pursuing it until it eats the jewel Kagome had thrown earlier.
In an effort to defeat the bird demon, Inuyasha allows Kagome to ride on his back and gives her a bow and arrow set. Knowing she is the reincarnation of Kikyou, he expects her to be an expert archer just like Kikyou was, even though Kagome insists that she ha s never used a bow before. Still, she fires an arrow but misses wildly. She tries again, but it becomes clear that she lacks the priestess's skill. Frustrated, Inuyasha drops her on the ground and pursues the demon himself, leaving Kagome rather irritated.
The demon grabs a child and carries him off into the air. Kagome tells Inuyasha to save the child, but he is far more interested in the jewel. He uses his claws to tear the demon apart, but the child ends up in the river below. Seeing the child in danger, Kagome dives in the water and swims out to rescue him, leading to speculation that she is a water imp. Although the child is safe, there is still the matter of the demon crow. He reforms and continues to fly away. The only part of him that remains is one of his feet that is still grasping the back of the child's shirt. Realizing she has an opportunity to destroy the crow, she attaches the foot to an arrow and shoots it, knowing that the claw will be attracted to the sacred jewel. The arrow hits and a bright pink light begins emit from the dying crow.
Inuyasha and Kagome begin looking for the jewel, but what they find is the head of the Corpse Crow. It flies at Kagome, but Inuyasha easily defeats it. A pink, glowing shard falls onto the ground, and Kagome picks it up and examines it, realizing it is a fragment of the sacred jewel. When she used the crow's foot to shatter the monster, she also shattered the jewel into hundreds of pieces which dispersed around the country. When Inuyasha realizes what she has done, he is furious. Now he and Kagome must travel around collecting the shards which are likely in the possession of other demons that wish to use the jewel for some evil purpose.
