Karen's Relationship With Yuuto

A devil with an angel’s face is probably a clique, but what about a government worker in pimp’s clothing? Kigai Yuuto is a bit of all four things, so he can be a slightly complex character to understand. He’s much like his water element—he goes with the flow, even if doing so meanings killing off hundreds of people as a Dragon of Earth. He does not particularly care about the cause, but he does not wish to fight against it either, rather he simply accepts his destiny and does not care about the ramifications. Water is his primary element and his strongest power, but he also wields a set of sai swords attacked to whip like ropes that are capable of considerable danger. While he is formidable in battle, he is prone to call off a fight if he thinks that he will not win.

Yuuto appears generally friendly and cheerful, but under that demeanor lays a dangerous apathy and a cold disregard for life. He certainly understands morality—he can discuss it like a champ—but ultimately it means very little to him. He has as much reason to protect the Earth as any of the Seals, specifically a little sister he says he cares about, yet he carelessly pursues a goal that will lead to her destruction. This disconnection between his surface persona and his inner self possesses a seductive quality—an indulgent sleaziness with a veneer of propriety. It explains both why he is a favorite among the ladies at work and why he screws Kanoe with the bedroom door open.

Yuuto is one of the first Dragons of Earth to appear when he tries to be the first to contact Kamui upon his return to Tokyo. Unfortunately for him, Sorata had the same idea and the two fight to determine who will talk to Kamui first. While both fight quite well, laughing and joking the entire time, ultimately he concedes the fight and allows Sorata to talk to him first. Later he fights against Karen when she manages to heavily injure Nataku in battle after the Angel attacks the Yamanote Train Line. He steps in to save his comrade and he and Karen flirt playfully while they battle to more or less a draw. It looks like the battle will continue for some time until Seiichirou shows up to help her even though she gave him a sleeping drug so that he would not follow her. Because they both have wounded companions, they agree to call the battle a draw and depart, though Karen insists that he ask for her if he wants to attack the city again.

In many ways, he is a good match for Karen, not only because they wield opposing elements, but because their personalities have interesting similarities and differences. They are both very flirtatious and sexually suggestive in their general appearance, and when they are together, they have excellent chemistry. They both use self deprecating humor to mock their own age, looks, and skill while politely complimenting the other. In addition, he dresses like a pimp and she works in a bathhouse. If he was not a cold, apathetic killer, they might make an interesting couple, but the fact remains that they are on opposing sides of a major issue—the destruction of all mankind. He may be able to say that people should not kill because it will always make another person sad, but that understanding does not influence his actions. Despite her playfulness, Karen is deeply passionate and truly cares about people, even to the point that she is willing to give her life to protect them. Yuuto may seem friendly, even kindhearted, but ultimately he is far too cold and casual to care about much of anything.
