During a battle between Konan and Kouto, Soi is killed but Nakago continues to carry her around and for some reason he blasts Mitsukake with his power. Mitsukake is terribly wounded but he still tries to do his duty as a doctor, even though he has no powers. In the manga a baby named Shoka is brought to him and he gives her his life like he couldn't for the other Shoka. Chichiri catches his body as he collapses to the ground. In the anime he uses all of his life force to save all the wounded, even those on the opposing side. Chichiri mourns his death more than anyone, sobbing as the life force leaves his friend's body. The soldiers stand up ready to fight each other to the death once again, but Chichiri screams for them to stop. They must not waste the sacrifice Mitsukake made by killing each other again, especially in such a meaningless battle.

In Miaka's world, she enjoys some time with Tamahome, but she continues to worry about her friend Yui. The truth is that when the Priestess summons the beast god of her territory, she is a sacrifice. If her will is not strong enough, the beast god consumes her after the final wish. Eventually Miaka convinces Yui that Nakago is using her and she uses her final wish to allow Miaka to summon Suzaku. With the power of Suzaku freed, the remaining Seishi regain their powers and they too come to Miaka's world.

Even with the additional help of Chichiri and Tasuki, Nakago still seems too powerful. Taiitsukun, the God of the Heavens, brings the souls of the dead Seishi to Miaka's world so that they too can help their priestess. Mitsukake tries to heal her considerable wounds, but cannot do anything. Everyone is concerned that with her wounds, she will not be able to withstand the power of Suzaku and she will be consumed. In spite of this, with the Seishi's help, Miaka seals Seriyuu and Tamahome kills Nagako. For her final wish, Miaka wishes that Tamahome could be born as a person in her world. The other Seishi all return to their world, and, after a while, Miaka and her Earth-born Tamahome find each other.
