Mitsukake is a kind hearted person who has dedicated his life to making people feel better. Although he rarely speaks, he often displays a keen sense of wisdom or a quick (but subtle) sense of humor. His shy and quiet manner makes him seem mysterious. Even though he is incredibly gentle, he is also very strong and able to fight. Although he rarely runs into battle like Tamahome or Tasuki, his job comes after the battle is over—when there are people who need to be healed.

He is the perfect doctor—wise, knowledgeable, and dedicated to his craft. People feel comfortable when in his presence. He will do whatever he can to help people, even if it puts his own life at risk. He simply values the lives of others more than his own. He is incredibly passionate about his work, so much so that it often was entirely consuming. Although this makes him a good doctor, it can make dealing with failure challenging.

As a Seishi of Suzaku, he was given the power of healing. While he cannot heal every injury or ailment, he can heal many of them, and quickly too. The problem is that he can only heal with his powers once a day and the strain often weakens him. This limitation vexes him since, given the opportunity, he would heal everyone. Instead, he must often rely on his knowledge of traditional medicine, reserving his magic abilities for times of great need.

Like many of the other Suzaku no Seishi, Mitsukake suffered through the death of a loved one. He once had a fiancé named Shoka, who helped him with his practice. Together they handled medicinal herbs and cared for patients. One day, while he was out of town caring for the sick, she became ill with a painful disease. Although she struggled to hold on until he returned, she died without even being able to say goodbye. He blamed himself for her death and shut himself off from the rest of the world. Although he was eventually able to say goodbye, her death still haunts him.

After joining the Suzaku no Seishi, he encounters cases when his powers aren’t enough to save his friends. Although these times are painful, he remains strong and does whatever he can to bring comfort to those that are left behind.

In spite of his many strengths, Mitsukake is often overlooked by fans of Fushigi Yuugi. Certainly he is not as load or as colorful as some of the other characters, but he is just as rich and complex. He is almost a tragic figure—saving many but always despairing that he cannot do more.
